Portals are gold spaces equipped with immersive audiovisual technology. When you enter a Portal, you come face-to-face with someone in a distant Portal live and full-body, as if in the same room. These portals have already connected more than 20,000 people around the world, stretching from Afghanistan to Mexico, and now at the Ynot Lot.

Shared Studios has now installed a Portal at the Ynot Lot until the end of January. They are hosting their Criminal Justice Dialogues, initiated and funded by Yale University’s Justice Collaboratory (and others, including the MacArthur Foundation), which make up a growing collection of conversations between persons in highly policed communities— including Newark, Milwaukee, Chicago, LA, and Mexico City. This portal was previously at Lexington Market, and the goal of the project is to amplify and archive the personal narratives and voices of individuals and communities directly affected by police violence whose perspectives are too often missing from conversations on this critical issue and encourage empowerment through the telling of these experiences via peer-to-peer conversations. In addition to the conversations, Shared Studios can offer up to six hours a week of programming to the community.

The Portal will be online 20-30 hours a week for the Criminal Justice Dialogues. In addition, SNAE has 6 hours a week to connect with our global network. We can think about programming in three categories; Portal supporting existing programming, Portal Events (usually RSVP), and Open Portal Dialogues (walk-ins). In the past, Portal Events have been used to host Shared_Meals, live performances, film screenings, celebrations and language and history lessons; held university recruiting sessions, and brought together entrepreneurs and potential funders. Click here to see some previous examples of what the Portal can host - the possibilities are endless!

We would love if you would like to connect to any of the cities below. Please send us a few sentences about your programming idea and we can try to make it happen! Events are usually 1-3 hours. Portal programming is funded by Shared Studios.
